Possible Gamecube price drop?

Gamespot is reporting that an EB Games employee has informed them their store has received promotional material for the May 3rd – May 23rd marketing period advertising a “New Low Price” for the Nintendo Gamecube. While the area the new price would be reflected in is blank, it’s certainly a good indicator that EB is at least considering a drop in the price on the ‘Cube. The employee did point out that the note included with the signage stated it was being sent out so stores could be prepared if Nintendo drops the price of the Gamecube, so there is a possibility that nothing will change. It should also be noted that the same employee told Gamespot that stores received the same type of kit just before the Playstation 2 price drop announcement.

So what does it all mean? My guess is with the 360 already on the market, and the Playstation 3 and Wii just around the corner, Nintendo may be looking to give the Gamecube a final push or Gamestop/EB may be deciding it’s time to start clearing out their inventory of Gamecube consoles. Ultimately, my guess is we’ll see the Gamecube drop to a retail price of $79.99 come E3.

Is Wii the real name of Nintendo’s new console?

With all the rumors going around about Nintendo possibly using the name Wii just to draw some press attention, I’d just like to point out that the official Nintendo website still refers to the console as the Revolution on the front page navigation bars. With something as easy to change as that, you’d have to wonder why it wasn’t done to reflect the new name. Of course, speculation that Nintendo isn’t going to name the console Wii is generating just as much press, so anything is possible at this point. We can speculate until the sun goes down and beyond, but I think the truth will only be known when Nintendo formally introduces the console at E3.

New Rise of Legends demo available

Second Rise of Legends demo now available!

Good as their word, Big Huge has released a second demo of their upcoming RTS game Rise of Legends. I’m still in the download queue over at Fileplanet, so I haven’t seen if it runs a bit smoother than the early beta demo. Hopefully they’ve added the ability to zoom out a little further than you could in the last demo.
————————–

4/29/06
I just finished my first game with the new build of the demo. While the zoom out maximum is pretty much the same, the demo has a much tighter feel to it and moved along at a much faster pace. Definitely an improvement from demo #1.

4/30/06
The more I play this new demo, the more I’m liking Rise of Legends. The “Battle for the Core” map allows a much better zoom out than the previous maps, and the sheer variety of unique units makes it appear that every map is going to need it’s own strategy. Bottom line? while I’d like to see the game handle huge numbers of units better and the AI still seems a bit “off” when your units are defending an area on their own, Rise of Legends is starting to look like a worthy successor to Rise of Nations once again.

Major Nelson tells readers how to make their own 360 Dashboard blade backgrounds

In his daily blog, Xbox Live’s Major Nelson told readers how to make their own background images for the blades in their Xbox 360 dashboards. While regular users are limited to only having the same image for all blades, it still is pretty neat. From MN’s blog.

—————————————-
“I just loaded one of the water ballon pictures as my Xbox 360 dashboard background, and it looks pretty good, so I thought I’d go through the steps of you can to do it:

All you need to do is download the hi rez version of this photo, then put it on a USB memory stick. Pop it into your Xbox 360, and sign in with your profile. Once you sign in, go to the Media Blade, then to Pictures. Go to Portable Device (this is your USB memory stick) scroll to find the photo (you’ll see a thumbnail) and when you have the photo highlighted, press X. That will make the photo your background on all blades as seen below. (You can not make a different image for each blade, only developers can do that with themes.) “ – Major Nelson
——————————————-

Pretty nifty indeed. I haven’t tried to add one yet, but rest assured, once I finish tonight’s site updates, I’ll be trying to find one that suits my style just right.

BIZARRE CREATIONS ANNOUNCES PGR3 LEADERBOARDS TO BE RESET

Bizarre Creations announced that because of the changes made to the ranking system in the “World Tournament” patch, they have reset all Project Gotham Racing 3 online leaderboards as of this morning. From things I had read recently, it had seemed a lot of people had stopped racing competitively in PGR3 for fear of losing their standing because of the way rank is now calculated. According to Bizarre it should only take a few races for people to wind up back in their correct skill classes.
——————————–

Now I wasn’t big on racing in PGR3 online against strangers, so this really doesn’t affect me much, but I’d like to hear news from people who do race on Live often and how wiping the leaderboards has affected them and if it’s done anything to rectify the problem created by the Tournament patch where no one was willing to enter ranked races.

Halo 3 video to be shown at E3?

IGN is reporting that Microsoft will be debuting a 2 minute video of Halo 3 at it’s Pre E3 news conference on May 9th. Hopefully this time the action will not only be on Earth, but stay on Earth. For more on this story, head on over to IGN.
——————————-

Now I don’t know about you, but to me, the single player component of Halo 2 was a massive dissapointment. The weapons weren’t as much fun, the locations were a lot weaker and many of the elements that made Halo so great were missing entirely. It seemed to me that the entire thing was really just built around the multi-player component (which was done flawlessly) and that they eprhaps let the story carry the game a little too much. I really missed those open area battles with lots of troops on eother side and a nice collection of vehicles.

It probably didn’t help that they forced you to play as the Arbiter, when if you’re like me, you believe the only good Covenant is a dead Covenant .

Here’s to hoping that we get what we were originally promised with Halo 2 – a full scale battle for Earth.

Galactic Civilizations II – The game Master of Orion III should have been

Now then, I picked up GalCiv II after hearing all the good press from places like Penny Arcade, Gamespot and the like, and I’ve got to say, they hype wasn’t far off. GalCiv II is certainly the game Master of Orion III should have been. Beyond some small gripes I have with the gameplay elements and ship construction, the game certainly is a masterpiece.

Another thing that has endeared the game to me is the fact that you don’t need to have the disc in the drice to play. Call me the laziest person on earth, but a lot of times I just don’t feel like trying to find where I put a specific game disc. Stardock feels that the reputation of their games and the ability for legitimate users to download free content is all the copy protection they need, and I for one thank them for it. It’s nice to be treated like a customer instead of a criminal sometimes.

So go fire up Stardock Central, load patch v1.1 and get moving!

Reggie Bush named EA Sports NCAA Football 2007 cover athlete

Hot off naming NFL MVP Shaun Alexander as the cover athlete for Madden 2007, EA today announced that USC running back and Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush will be the cover athlete for NCAA Football ’07. When asked about the honor, Bush showed a bit of his gamer side;
——————————————–

“This has been an amazing year for me and being chosen for the cover of NCAA Football 07 is a great way to end my college career, I’ve grown up playing EA SPORTS games and never imagined I would see myself on the cover of one.” – Reggie Bush

——————————————–
As I was posting this, the Houston Texans announced that they will be taking North Carolina State DE Mario Williams with the first pick in the draft.

Man, why didn’t the Jets trade up for the #2 pick earlier in the week, we could have had Bush!

GEARS OF WAR OFFICIAL WEBSITE NOW LIVE

If the rumors are to be believed, Emergence Day is sometime in November so Microsoft can take some thunder away from the Playstation 3 behemoth. With the possibility of a playable demo of Gears of War appearing on Live during E3, the anticipation is beginning to hit a fever pitch. To push you just a bit further over the edge, Epic Games has now launched the official Gears of War website. Head on over to http://www.gearsofwar.com and check it out!
—————————————————

The more I see of Gears of War, the more Emergence Day seems just too far away, even without a tentative date. Join with me in hoping that a playable demo is premiered at E3 and that it quickly finds it’s way to the Live Marketplace.

Nintendo officially renames Revolution… to Wii…

Well, Nintendo has officially revealed the true name of the Revolution, and the name is…Wii. (Pronounced We) I personally really like the “Revolution” code name, as it summed up everything Wii was about, but it appears Nintendo feels Wii is more marketable. Let the gnashing of teeth begin. I’ll update more on this story as it breaks, but for now head over to the Revolution section of the Nintendo website for details.

UPDATE: According to sources, Nintendo chose Wii over Revolution for several reasons, including;

1.) The word Revolution had too much in common with the Xbox 360. (One revolution is 360 degrees)
2.) Wii will not be abbreviated when listed the way other systems are.
3.) Wii can be promounced the same way in any language.
4.) It better focuses on the “It’s a console for everyone” approach Nintendo is looking to take with the… Wii .

————————————————-

I don’t know about you guys, but Wii has “marketing pukes” written all over it to me. I think most people really liked the Revolution name as it was what the… Wii was all about – turning the industry on it’s ear with a whole new approach to gaming. A revolution, if you will.

So what do you guys say? Is Wii the worst name that’s ever graced a console and is this an even bigger blow than the PS3 took when the “boomerang” was first shown?

Datel releases Max Media Player for Nintendo DS

Well, it looks like Datel is at it again. As I posted in an earlier news bit, recently Datel has been coming out with some truly innovative products. The latest to down the pipeline is the MAX Media Player for the Nintendo DS. Simply put, it’s a 4 gigabyte hard drive and software package that will allow you to listen to MP3’s, watch videos, view pictures on your DS and uhm… run executable files. It’s a bit expensive at a suggested retail of $189.99, but if you want a device with those features, such is the price you’ll pay. How well does it work? That I couldn’t tell you, but I’d be interested in hearing from anyone who’s picked one up.
————————————————-

So, do you think that for the price it’s worth picking up? If you’ve purchased one, how well does it work? Inquiring minds want to know!

EA CONFIRMS WII VERSION OF MADDEN

Gamespot is reporting that Electronic Arts has announced they have a Wii specific version of Madden in the works. The game will NOT be a port of Madden for the other consoles on the market, and is even being produced by a team other than EA Tiburon.
While that may be a very good thing (based on the 360 version of Madden), I’m still not sold on the concept of the Wii controller and many game types, this being one of them.

To give you an idea of how it will play…

"Players will hike the ball by mimicking a quarterback receiving the ball from the center, and then pass it to a receiver by making a throwing gesture with the free-hand controller. The faster the passing motion, the more of a bullet pass it becomes (in previous Madden editions, bullet passes were made by holding the passing button down longer).

Kicking the ball will be accomplished by sweeping the controller up as if it were a kicker’s leg striking the ball. A fast, level swing will make for a hard, straight kick.

The Revolution controller will also come into play when running the ball, as jerking the controller left or right will make the ball-carrier juke to either side, while shoving it straight ahead will make him stiff-arm the opposition." -Gamespot

It sounds like there could be a lot of problems with this concept if you ask me. On a related note, how long do you think it will be before someone "throwing" the football in the game accidentally lets go and breaks their TV?

SONY AND MICROSOFT RELEASE FIRST QUARTER FINANCIAL REPORTS

I was checking out Gamasutra and it appears Sony and Microsoft reported their first quarter earnings today, no huge surprises, but here’s the quick version as far as the game divisions of each company are concerned;

Microsoft: The bottom line for Microsoft is that while total revenues are up due to sales of the Xbox 360 and it’s related hardware/software, they took large losses for the same reason, and the Xbox division is still in the red. For those who don’t know, it’s estimated that Microsoft loses $126 on every Premium Xbox 360 sold. Click here for the Gamasutra article.

UPDATE: Included in those announcements yesterday was word that Microsoft has currently shipped 3.2 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide.

Sony: Sony’s game division continues to be one of their bright spots during this time of increased competition in the consumer electronics field, however Sony did note that the games division expects to post huge losses later this year due to the launch of the PS3. Click here for the Sony Q1 Gamasutra article.

Rise of Legends goes gold!

The sequel to the legendary Rise of Nations series, Rise of Legends has gone gold according to Gamespot, and is on track to meet it’s May 9th release date. I don’t know about you, but I’m excited! If Big Huge stays true to it’s word, we should be seeing a second, more finalized demo of the game coming soon.
—————————————–

What more is there to really say? Rise of Nations and RoN: Thrones and Patriots were both amazing games. I never thought someone could successfully merge a RTS with Civilization until Brian Reynolds proved me wrong. While the beta demo was a bit buggy to say the least, it showed enough promise that Rise of Legends is still VERY high up on my radar.

Bone: The Great Cow Race now available

The next chapter in Telltale Games Bone series, Bone: The Great Cow Race, is now available. For those not familiar with Telltale Games, it was founded by many of the programmers from LucasArts who left following the cancellation of Freelance Police and LA’s move away from graphic adventures. A demo is available so you can try it before you commit to buying it. While you’re there, why not check out the Sam & Max cartoons Steve Purcell is putting up on their site while the Sam & Max game https://www.telltalegames.com/sam_and_max is in development? Click here to head on over to Telltale’s website.

You know, I REALLY want to like this series and the work Telltale is doing, but the demo for Act 2: The Great Cow Race, left me pretty flat. It seemed overly simplistic, a bit low budget, the voice acting was horrid and it just didn’t seem to have the sense of humor the old LucasArts graphic adventure games had. Like I said, I really want to like the work Telltale is doing, because they’re the ones working on the new Sam & Max game, but having played some of Bone, I’m losing a bit of faith.

So, if you’ve played either of the full versions of the Bone episodes (or the demos for that matter), what were your impressions of them?

The Road to E3 2006

Yes, it’s that time of year again. E3 is right around the corner and everyone is lining up to show you what they’ll be bringing you later this year. During E3, we’ll be presenting you with daily updates on all the goings on. Before you ask, nope – I don’t have tickets to E3, so I’ll be getting my news the same way as everyone else.

Sony should have some big news about the Playstation 3 to report as well as the PS2 and PSP. Head on over to Sony’s E3 2006 page to get an early look at how they’ll be running things.

While Microsoft won’t have a new console to present, they do plan on going all out during E3. To start off, for the entire week of E3, May 8th through the 14th, Live Gold service will be completely free. Also check out the interview with MS Corporate VP Peter Moore where he lets us in on some of the other goodies we can expect during E3. Most exciting of all, he states that the marketplace will be keeping up with E3 and that many of the demos playable on the floor will be presented on Live for download. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a dream come true. Would it be asking too much to hope that Gears of War turns out to be one of those playable demos? Head on over to Microsoft’s E3 2006 page for more!

No specific page from Nintendo yet, but there’s sure to be one soon as the Revolution should be making it’s public debut at E3 as well.

You know, with all this coverage and the ability to play the demos that are on the floor, it’s like having a little slice of E3 in your living room. Now I just have to go out and hire some booth babes!
———————————————————-

Now I don’t know about you, but I love E3 week – and I’ve never even gone in person. It’s that one week where you can check gaming news and constantly see something new about cool game or item that’s just around the corner. More importantly, it’s that one time of year when all the companies are dying to get information out about their products. Sure, they keep a tight lip on things for most of the year, but during E3 it’s a whole different game. All the games that have been under wraps suddenly appear like Cinderella at the ball and try to capture our hearts (and wallets).

The news about how Microsoft plans on using Live to try and bring the E3 experience home by way of demos and trailers has got to be one of the bext Live marketing ideas I’ve heard in a long time. Add in the giveaways and contests that will be going on during the free weekend, and it’s certainly going to be a good time to be a 360 owner.

Don’t get me wrong though, it’s not all about Microsoft though – E3 is going to be our first real look at both the Playstation 3 (hopefully) and the Revolution – and if you’re not excited about either of them, then you’re either a fanboy or lying.

So here we go, the road to E3 is now open, let’s all hop on and enjoy the ride!

How to make your own Xbox 360 Arcade Controller

I’ve been looking for wiring diagrams for the Xbox 360 controller for awhile now as I’m intrigued with the idea of building a full sized Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved arcade cabinet. Anyway, while searching for said information, I came across this tutorial on how to build a working arcade controller out of a 360 wired pad over at GamersReports. While the example uses a Street Fighter II Anniversary Edition Arcade Stick for the controls, it shouldn’t be too hard to just apply the same idea to regular arcade parts and make a custom one. Too bad, there wasn’t a tutorial for the analog sticks, or I could have started planning to play Geometry Wars: RE in style someday! Click here for the tutorial.

If you’ve played Project Gotham Racing 3, you’ve probably noticed the Geometry Wars & Geometry Wars: RE arcade machines in the back of your garage. Well, everytime I look at them, I can’t help but think how cool it would be to build a full sized machine using that design. It probably helps that I’m a Geometry Wars: RE addict.

Anyway, like the news bit says, I came across this tutorial for building an arcade controller for the Xbox and think it may be time to use a lot of those arcade parts lying around here that are earmarked for stalled projects.

So anyway, let’s discuss both the tutorial article as well as building custom controllers here for a bit. Post some pics of your creations if you have them, and if you happen to know of a site that explains just how the analog sticks on the 360 controller work, please, please, please let me know. That GW:RE cabinet really would be nice.

Xbox Diamond Cards definitely shipping

I just received an e-mail from Microsoft letting me know my Xbox Diamond Card is being printed and should be arriving in 2-3 weeks. If you’ve gotten your Diamond Card already, have you been able to use it anywhere? SIs it indeed make you the coolest guy at the party? Let us know!

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children to release today

Well, this is one of the initial tests of the comment system for the site, so feel free to register and discuss Advent Children here. A few words before we start…

1.) Be respectful to your fellow posters – I have no problem beating the ban button like a bongo drum.
2.) If you’re going to post a major spoiler, please indicate so. Don’t make me come find you.
3.) If you’ve got something to say, say it – and back it up with well thought comments. Posts like “FF7 roxxors cuz square is the best and xbox sux – lol Advent Children FTW” doesn’t tell us much except that you’re stupid. Don’t be that kid.
—————————————–

Anyway, I’ll be honest and say that I’ve managed to keep most of Advent Children off of my radar, so beyond knowing that somehow Sephiroth is back and that most of the characters from FF7 are involved, I don’t know all that much about the story of AC.

New Super Mario Bros DS Site & Video

Nintendo sent word that their site for the upcoming DS title New Super Mario Bros. is now up and running. Better yet, the site also includes in game video footage of NSMB. You know, the desire to run out and buy a DS just keeps getting stronger and stronger. Must… hold… off… until… DS Lite…

As the news bit hints at, I still don’t own a Nintendo DS. I was highly skeptical of the system when it first came out, but Nintendo has really put some effort into the DS in the last year or so, and there’s a veritable pile of games I want to play on the thing. The problem is, with the DS-Lite coming sometime in the near future, I’d rather hold off and pick up the shiny when it hits stores. While thats normally not a problem, games like Resident Evil, Brain Age, Advance Wars, Castlevania, Mario & Luigi and now NSMB make that a very rough thing indeed.

So, how excited about the New Super Mario Bros are you, and more importantly, what are some of your favorite memories from the SMB series. Share with the class!

LATENITE’S BLOG – COUNTING THE GENERATIONS

I was over at Gamer’s Lounge, the gaming forums I frequent most often, and the question of what the proper way to count the different generations of video game consoles came up. I thought a bit on that and then did some research around, and found that there seem to be three schools of thought on this. While I personally subscribe to the idea that we’re in the 5th generation of modern gaming, others may not agree quite as quickly. Before I bore you any further, if you want to read more on this, head over to todays blog entry.

While I personally subscribe to the idea that we’re in the 5th generation of modern gaming, others may not agree quite as quickly. Before I bore you any further, if you want to read more on this, head over to todays blog entry.

FINAL FANTASY VII: ADVENT CHILDREN DVD IN STORES TODAY

I wasn’t the world’s biggest Final Fantasy VII fan by a long shot, but I did play, finish and enjoy the game. I’m pretty curious to see where the story picks up and where it takes the characters as I’ve put blinders on to the whole thing so as not to ruin any surprises before I see it. I’m also interested in seeing if Advent Children is as good as the people who have seen it say it is, or if they’ve just gone over to the fanboy/fangirl side of the force. Either way, it’s in stores today and hopefully I’ll get a chance to get my grubby mitts on it shortly.

On a side note, this is the first news item that includes a "comment on this news" link, so if you’re in the mood to, feel free to shed some light on Advent Children and share with the rest of the class. Other than Front Page News Discussion topics, the entire forum is closed at the moment and you may only reply to the existing topic. As this is only a test, there is no ETA for the forums to go fully live. Finally, you must register before you can post. Hell, while I’m at it, any descriptions, depictions or rebroadcast of the forums without the express written consent of Major League Baseball is strictly prohibited.

NYLATENITE’S GAMER’S PARADISE – NOW WITH BLOG!

In case you didn’t notice, there’s now a blog link in the site menu. You might be wondering why I’m adding a blog when in essence the whole front page of the site basically follows that format. Well, it’s because I’m sure I’ll be rambling about a million things that don’t have to necessarily do anything with gaming, and I’d prefer to keep the main site strictly on topic. No need to check the blog for gaming news as I’ll drop a note on this page anytime there’s some gaming topic up there. There’s still a lot of work to be done on both the blog and the site in general, so please pardon it’s appearance for awhile.

OLDBLIVION PC MOD TO ALLOW OLDER VIDEO CARDS TO RUN ELDER SCROLLS IV

You know, I often wonder why it is that some of the best and most useful mods come from third parties. Anyway, a modder named asp has developed Oldblivion, a mod that will allow people who don’t have uber high end PC’s to enjoy the RPG goodness that is the Elder Scrolls IV. What exactly is Oldblivion you ask?

"Oldblivion is a piece of software which allows graphics cards which are pre DirectX9 to run Elder Scrolls: Oblivion from Bethesda. This means that Oblivion can run on cards such as Geforce 3, Geforce 4, Radeon 9200 and so on. Oldblivion is still in an early development phase but it’s fairly stable, however there still are a few bugs and kinks to work out." – Oldblivion website.

If you’re one of the many people who bought Oblivion just to find that you could barely play it, why not head on over to the Oldblivion site and see if this mod can make things better for you.

NEW KAMEO: ELEMENTS OF POWER DEMO IN XBOX LIVE MARKETPLACE

What’s being listed as a "new" demo for Kameo: Elements of Power is now available in the Xbox Live Marketplace. I’m not sure what’s the difference between this one and the old one, but Kameo was a much better game than I expected it to be, so if you haven’t played it yet, why not give the new demo a try? The demo weighs in at 1 gigabyte, so plan your download time accordingly.

VIACOM TO BUY XFIRE

While I’ve never been an Xfire user, I know many people who are. To them, I’d like to express my sincerest condolences as Gamespot is reporting that Viacom has reached an agreement to buy Xfire for 108 million dollars and will be merging it with MTV Networks. You know what that means gang, a company that knows nothing about gaming is attempting to capture that ever elusive young-male demographic and is going to start deluging us with what they think is hip and cool. Get ready to see a bunch of advertisements and changes that don’t really reflect the user-base.

OBLIVION: WIZARD’S PORTAL ADD-ON NOW AVAILABLE FOR XBOX 360 AND PC

The third of the promised official add-ons for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is now available for both the Xbox 360 and PC. The new content retails for $1.89 on PC from the Elder Scrolls store and 150 Marketplace Points ($1.88) in the Xbox Live Marketplace. While I love Oblivion, word on the last 2 add-on packs has been so negative that I’m not even considering buying this one until I hear a full review of the content. Here’s the description of the add-on as per Bethesda;

"Located high in the Jeral Mountains of Cyrodiil away from prying eyes, this add-on makes the Wizard’s Tower, Frostcrag Spire, become available. Packed with numerous useful enchantments, this structure will prove invaluable to magic-oriented characters.

Features:

-A fully detailed tower for you to explore.

-A breathtaking view of Cyrodiil from the highest point in the land.

-An indoor botanical garden with over 130 specimens… including Oblivion-native herbs.

-Summon Atronach Familiars that obey your commands.

-Instant teleports to every Mages Guild in Cyrodiil.

-New Spell and Recharge vendor in the Imperial City.

-Fully upgrade the furnishings in your lair to suit your needs.

-Upgrade to a fully functional Enchanting and Spellmaking station with no need to join the Mages Guild.

-Upgrade to a laboratory that buffs your Alchemy skill." – Offical Elder Scrolls Store

UNO COMING TO XBOX LIVE ARCADE

I must have missed the original announcement or something, but I saw this bit of news while surfing Kotaku. Apparently, the classic card game Uno will be making it’s way to the Xbox 360 via the Live Arcade sometime soon. I wonder if they’ll let people play for money like we did back in high school… heck, playing for Marketplace Points would be just as good too!

Either way, xboxde.com has some screenshots from the debug version of the game, so head on over, check them out, and then start getting ready to give someone the old Draw 4 Wild treatment. Click here for the screenies.

The official site for the highly anticipated sequel to God of War is now live. The Playstation 2 exclusive title is currently scheduled to hit shelves early next year, and looks to pick up right where God of War left off.

"God of War saw Kratos, A mortal warrior, set upon an epic quest to dethrone a god. but his journey did not end there. In God of War II, Kratos sits atop his Olympus throne as the new god of war – far more ruthless than Ares ever was. To end his continued torment, Kratos must journey to the far reaches of the Earth and defeat untold horrors and alter that which no mortal, or god has ever changed, his fate. CASTLEVANIA: PORTRAIT OF RUIN OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED

Konami has officially announced the next game in the Castlevania series. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin will be appearing on the Nintendo DS this fall. From the press release;

"In Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, players take on the role of vampire hunter Jonathan Morris and Charlotte Orlean, a young girl with tremendous magical abilities. Amidst the chaos of World War II, many lost souls from the global conflict were left to wander the world in search of salvation. Desperate to escape their terrible plight, they sought to resurrect Dracula’s Castle from the rubble of society, assisted by two mysterious vampire sisters. Now Jonathan and Charlotte must work together to confront the face of evil and ensure that this villainous catastrophe is not unleashed on the world.

Evolving the action-adventure gameplay that has been the series’ trademark for 20 years, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin lets players switch freely between Jonathan and Charlotte as they proceed on their heroic mission, each with their own strengths, abilities and style of play. Players can now utilize powerful Summon attacks in which both characters unleash the full extent of their combat abilities to decimate the game’s more than 100 different enemies and massive bosses in new environments such as the desert and Misty Town. In their quest to stop Dracula’s resurrection, Jonathan and Charlotte can collect and use different weapons, equipment and items to increase their overall skill level and acquire new abilities."

Yet another reason for me to run out and grab a DS – Hopefully the DS-Lite will be out in the U.S. by then.

MICROSOFT TO CHANGE CPU IN XBOX 360?

Chartered Semiconductor today announced that they have entered into an agreement with Microsoft to manufacture .65nm 3 core processors for the Xbox 360 beginning in 2007. Chartered originally worked with IBM to produce the current .90nm 3 core Xbox 360 processor. According to the press release, the new processor will consume less power, run cooler than the current 360 CPU and cost less to manufacture. While normally, this wouldn’t be a cause for serious concern, vnunet.net is reporting another feature that was not commented in the press release – namely that Chartered is claiming that the processor can also run software faster than the existing 360 CPU.

If true, that could open a whole can of worms as not only might games wind up being optimized for the new processor, but I’m quite sure John Q. Gamer isn’t going to be too pleased to find out that the 360 has more in common with PC’s than thought – namely that better, faster models might come along and degrade the experience of early adopters.

Hopefully this will turn out to be false. I don’t know about you, but I’m glad I bought the 2 year extended warranty – you never know what kind of trouble a "slow-thinking" Xbox 360 could get into.

INFINIUM LABS DELAYS PHANTOM LAPBOARD

As some may know, Infinium Labs is the company behind the now defunct and ever so aptly named Phantom game console. Back in February, Infinium finally stated what everyone knew – namely that after all the smoke and mirrors, the Phantom console was not going to be coming out – at least not anytime soon. Instead, Infinium stated that they were going to focus on their other product, the Phantom Lapboard – a custom made wireless keyboard/mouse combo that is designed to be sit in ones lap and be configurable for right or left handed use. Well, today Gamespot reports that Infinium has announced that the Lapboard will miss it’s announced summer release window and instead slip to a “No later than October” release. Sound familiar? I thought it might. How these guys keep finding suckers to invest in their scam is beyond me. Does anyone really buy that they can’t meet the deadline for releasing a keyboard? I wonder what they really spent the 5 million dollars in additional funding they got back in February on.

Check out the note about the Lapboard delay at Gamespot here and for further information, check out this news item from Gamespot back on February 21st when they opened the books and cancelled the Phantom.

PHILLIPS PATENTS A DEVICE TO FORCE YOU TO WATCH COMMERCIALS

This isn’t really video game related, but since I’m a technology nut and love the shinies, I’m posting this anyway. An article over at C|Net News states that Phillips just took out a patent for a device that would either not allow you to change a channel during a “flagged” advertisement or to not be able to speed over flagged commercials on your DVR.

An option would also be available for the user to pay a fee to the broadcaster to allow the channel change.

Phillips claims they developed it for on-demand television and not for regular broadcast use, but they also state that it would be up to the individual broadcasters as to if they wished to implement the service.

Here’s to hoping this is an idea that will die a short, yet oh so painful death. Click here for the C|Net article.

SOMEONE HAS BEEN PLAYING TOO MUCH BURNOUT

Take a look at the Bugatti Veyron and tell me it doesn’t look like a car straight out of Burnout.

Apparently it’s the first production car that can clock in at 250mph – The Saleen S7 apparently “only” hits 248.

So, how much will it cost for you to feel like you should be featured on Crash FM? Only a paltry 1.2 million dollars – but act fast as Bugatti is only making 300 of them!

However, even if you could afford to get one, the gas bills alone could drive you to bankruptcy – the Veyron has an 8 Liter W16 engine (two V8’s put together), 4 turbo-chargers, can generate 1,001hp and… can burn 1.33 gallons of gas per minute.

*sigh* Guess I’ll just have to keep playing Project Gotham Racing 3 to get my high-speed kicks.

THE LAST XBOX 360 FACEPLATE YOU’LL EVER NEED?

ANOTHER SET OF CARS COMING TO PGR3 – FOR FREE

I was surfing at Kotaku, and came across this news bit – It seems Cadillac will be footing the bill for a new car pack for PGR3 as a way to advertise their cars.

Now I’m not sure how effective of a campaign it will be (just because when I think of cars, Cadillac is one of the last brands on my list) but I’m inclined to agree with Kotaku’s take on this that so long as there aren’t any obnoxious advertising intrusions that come with the car pack, it’s a near perfect example of how in-game advertising should work – The Advertiser gets exposure, the developer gets money, and the gamer gets free goodies.

Now hopefully someone will spring for a few extra garages so you can have all these new cars at once without swapping.

With such great ideas as the XSATA Xbox 360 to PC/PC to Xbox 360 Hard Drive transfer device, a 4 gigabyte USB Hard Drive and the Memory card to PC transfer kit, Datel is certainly making a name for themselves in the land of Xbox 360 peripherals. THE ORRERY NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE PC VERSION OF OBLIVION

We reported yesterday that the Orrery add-on was released for the Xbox 360 version of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Well, today the PC version of the mod was made available on the Official Oblivion Downloads page for the sum of $1.89. Details for the add-on are the same as the Xbox 360 version.

On a side note, the initial word coming in about this add-on is not all that positive. As I haven’t purchased it yet, I can’t personally confirm anything, but word on many forums is that the series of quests it imparts last about 10 minutes and simply award one new spell.

XBOX 360 MLB2K6 “FREEZING” ISSUE WORKAROUND

The folks at 2K Sports have come up with a temporary fix for the freezing problems many people are experiencing with the Xbox 360 version of MLB2K6. While they work on a permanent patch to the game, you have 2 options…

1) Remove or disable the HDD

or…

2) Load three different Xbox 360 games to the main title screen of each game then load Major League Baseball 2K6 on Xbox 360. All three Xbox 360 games must be completely different before loading Major League Baseball 2K6.

Not exactly ideal, but at least it’s something until they get the matter corrected.

I’ll admit I was skeptical about it’s quality when I ordered it last year, but it’s a damn fine introduction to cabinet building, and odds are even if you’ve already built your own cabinet, you’ll find some information you wish you had during the process.

XBOX LIVE UPDATES

For those with Xbox Live and an Xbox 360, some new content has hit the marketplace. Here’s what’s out there…

Burnout Revenge: 6 Free cars – Download them directly from the marketplace.

Project Gotham Racing 3 – A web update for the upcoming tournaments and a free car – The Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

Project Gotham Racing 3 Speed Pack – It’s a pay expansion featuring new cars and the free car – the 11 new “pay” cars are sold individually for 60 points each, or you can get all 11 for 400 points. One thing to note, currently if you have the full 80 cars in career mode you will not be able to add all 12 new cars to your garage as after car 84, no new garages open – you’ll need to remove cars to add the ones you want to use. I suggest just swapping in and out the new cars as in game they have no cost, and thus you lose nothing selling them and rebuying them. Hopefully a patch will open a new garage. You can still use all the cars in multiplayer mode though, so no stress there. The cars are;

RUF RT12, Saleen S7 Twin Turbo, Audi RS 4, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Dodge Viper SRT-10 Coupe, Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, Lamborghini Gallardo SE, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII FQ-400, Nissan NISMO R34GT-R Z-Tune, Pontiac GTO and the Radical SR8 .

The Outfit – A free picture pack.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour ’06 – Demo now available.

STATE OF THE SITE REPORT

Still breathing and once again amazed at how long it’s been since I updated the website. Hopefully my lazy butt will be a bit more consistent now. I should make making some changes to the layout of the site in an attempt to make it a bit more modern looking. As always, I’ll try not to get distracted by actual gaming, but no promises.

About

Here’s what you need to know about this wonderful little site that I call home…

This site is entirely based on the personal opinions of the editorial staff, internet reports, conjecture, rumors, and blatant idiocy. In no way should any report, news item, picture or description on this site ever be taken as 100 percent factual. To put it simply, if you think the 10 minutes of research I may do into a specific subject is enough for you to take something as reported at face value, you need to get your head examined.

As implied by the statement above, information on this website can, and probably will, contain numerous inaccuracies and as such should never be used to make any kind of an informed decision on a subject. Seriously. The nature of news on the internet and the business of reporting on rumors, ommissions and, let’s call it what it is, wild-ass guessing should never be mistaken as 100 percent accurate. While all attempts are made to report things as accurately as we can, things are always going to get missed or misunderstood in the shuffle.

In short, take everything on this site as what it is – news being reported by someone who is a fan of the video game industry, but who has no connections to the game industry or related businesses.

If you’ve seen something you feel is inaccurate or misinterperated, feel free to drop us a line at nylatenite@yahoo.com to let us know the truth of the matter. Thank you.
