SONY’S KEN KUTARAGI RETIRES

Ken Kutaragi, the man known as “The Father of the PlayStation” has announced that he will be stepping down as CEO and Chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment on June 19th and retiring. As you may remember, Sony performed some corporate shuffling a few months back in which Kutaragi was moved away from the day to day operations of the PlayStation division, a move many suspected was due to the poor retail performance of the PlayStation 3. Today’s announcement begs the question of whether Kutaragi was forced out of the company, grew discontented with his new role at Sony or, as the official press release states, actually plans on pursuing other interests besides the PlayStation brand. Officially, Kutaragi will continue working with Sony as both honorary chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment International and as a special advisor to the company.

Kaz Hirai, Sony’s current President and COO of Sony Computer Entertainment, has been appointed as Kutaragi’s successor. Whether this move indicates that Sony needs Hirai to move the division further towards profitability as he’s considered more of a businessman and less of a visionary – unlike Kutaragi, or if Hirai is also slowly being moved towards the door as well, is anyone’s guess. Check out the below links for more on this story.

HUGE XBOX 360 DASHBOARD UPDATE COMING MAY 7TH

Microsoft has confirmed that the features showcased in that leaked Gamespot video are in fact, true and have announced that the update in question will be hitting on May 7th of this year.

At the heart of the update is the addition of Windows Live Messenger to Xbox Live, allowing chat and instant messaging between Xbox 360 owners, Windows PC users and Windows Mobile users;

“Your Xbox Live® friends list is about to get a whole lot bigger. Microsoft Corp. today announced the launch of Windows Live™ Messenger on Xbox 360™, connecting friends across Xbox 360 consoles, Microsoft® Windows®-based PCs and Windows Mobile®-powered devices.

With this update to Xbox 360, friends and families can easily connect and chat directly from their television using Windows Live Messenger, a network of more than 20 billion relationships and more than 260 million active accounts.” – Xbox.com

To assist with the use of Live Messenger, Microsoft will also be making a mini-keyboard attachment available for Xbox 360 controllers. Why? While the Xbox 360 does allow the use of standard PC USB keyboards, many users don’t have a setup that makes standard keyboard use practical and the keyboard attachment should address some of those issues.

The attachment, as shown below, looks to connect to the bottom of the control, possibly through the headset port, with a pass through for headset connections – though it appears some type of adapter will be needed unless the headset port changes in the production version. While no price was made available at the time of the announcement, Microsoft did state that the keyboard would be available some time this summer.

keyboardattach

The update isn’t all about Live Messenger though – we’ll also be seeing enhancements to the dashboard’s layout, achievement notifications, download management, and more. Check out all the new/updated features being added below;

  • A richer Achievement notification pop-up will showcase the name of the unlocked Achievement and the gamerscore value without needing to leave the game to check the Achievements list.
  • Enhanced family settings features for Xbox Live communications enable different defaults for video chat and voice chat.
  • A new Xbox Live Marketplace blade lets Xbox Live members access the content they seek—whether it is game content or TV shows and movies (available in the United States)—from one place on Xbox Live.
  • Updates to Xbox Live Arcade allow owners to quickly see which Xbox Live Arcade games their friends are playing and join in the fun. Xbox Live members can also compare progress of leaderboard scores and Achievements directly with all friends on their friends list. Expanded “Tell a Friend” capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.
  • Expanded “Tell a Friend” capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.
  • A new option in Auto Downloads provides faster access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox Live Arcade games.
  • New progressive download controls provide easy access to optimal viewing options by letting people fast-forward, rewind, pause and resume as their video is downloaded from Xbox Live Marketplace.
  • Extension of the background download functionality will allow owners to set their Xbox 360 console to turn off automatically after downloads are complete.

Now let’s just hope that we don’t see another mass-bricking of 360’s following the update. Check out the links below for more details;

THREE MORE LEGAL EXIDY ROMS FOR MAME RELEASED

The Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator’s (MAME) development team has announced that H.R. Kauffman, president of Xidy, Inc. (formerly Exidy) has made three more classic games from the Exidy catalog available for free, non-commercial use with the MAME. The three titles, Crash, Fire One! and Rip Cord, were all released in 1979 and while they may not represent the best of Exidy’s catalog, the fact that any ROMS have been made available at all is still something to cheer about. Here’s to hoping Exidy’s titles from 1980 – 1982 are next, as some of those are games I’d love to see everyone get to enjoy again.

  • MAMEDev.org – Official site of the MAME development team
  • MAMEDev ROM page – ROM images legally released for non-commercial use by their owners
  • Exidy – Wikipedia Entry
  • Crash – Killer List of Videogames entry

LAZY DAY TRAILERS: MASS EFFECT

Bioware has made another video of their upcoming sci-fi epic Mass Effect available to the public. The video you’re about to watch seems to be from a cut-scene that I’m guessing serves as an introduction to the main plot line. Check it out below.

Mass Effect is rumored to be launching on June 5th and will appear exclusively on the Xbox 360.

IS THE XBOX 360 GUITAR HERO II X-PLORER GUITAR DEFECTIVE?

There have been numerous complaints across the internet regarding the X-plorer guitar included with the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II, and yesterday word began to circulate that RedOctane’s customer service had notified someone that there were two (2) models of guitar that were in fact defective.

The reported problem with the guitars, aside from having the worst back button in the history of the franchise, is that the whammy bar is partially or totally unresponsive, the yellow fret button sticks, the “tilt” function for Star Power works, but only sporadically and that some form of issue with the strummer exists, be it that it’s too loose, too tight, doesn’t work, etc. (For those wondering about my comment regarding the back button, that’s the button used to activate Star Power if you don’t feel like tilting the guitar – and it’s miniscule and recessed on the X-plorer)

According to Kotaku, one of their readers got the following response to his queries regarding some of the issues he was having with his controller;

“We have isolated this issue to two model numbers that can be found on the guitar’s packaging. The numbers are 95065 and 95055. We are asking that customers who puchased their items from a retailer perform an exchange with that respective store (for a model number other than the defective two listed above). Customer’s who purchased through our online story can complete an rma request for their defective item and we will exchange it for a fully function guitar controller. We do apologize for the inconvenience and will [resolve] these matters.” – Quote from RedOctane customer support as per the Kotaku article

Since my guitar is a 95055 and it most certainly has lag issues with the whammy-bar, I started to look to see if there was any official word regarding that comment. In searching through RedOctane’s site and the official Guitar Hero forums, I couldn’t find anything other than links back to the Kotaku article or other sites that had picked up on that quote. There was no official comment from RedOctane to be found.

Here is what I did find in my search for answers;

  1. It appears that there are only two models of guitar – the 95055 and 95065. The few sites that stated the box they had said “95067” advised that the guitar inside was labeled as a 95065.
  2. I Called my local Gamestop (where I bought the game) and they advised they haven’t heard anything about the issues with the guitars or any kind of a recall / return request.

Given the horror stories about some of the guitars and the fact that mine, while off, isn’t badly off, I’m really inclined to hold onto it for a few more days until someone knows something concrete as I’d hate to bring it back and get one that’s even worse. (Especially since the only guitars out there are apparently the problematic 95055 and 95065 models)

So, is RedOctane really asking people to return their guitars? I don’t know. I know I’ll be holding onto mine at least until next week in hopes that someone makes an official, on the record, statement about this whole mess.

GAMESPOT LEAKS MAY 7TH XBOX 360 DASHBOARD UPDATE NEWS?

Now don’t take this at 100% face value, but according to MyGamerCard.net, Gamespot accidentally posted the below video about the new features coming to the Xbox 360 Dashboard on May 7th. The video was supposedly taken down almost immediately at Gamespot, but resurfaced on YouTube a short time later. Since Gamespot hasn’t mentioned the video one way or another as of yet, there’s really no way of knowing if they were just posting a video they saw somewhere, if this was actually one of their in-house produced videos or if they have nothing to do with the video at all.

I will say that the guy saying “yippee” in response to one of the features is what tripped my “I’m not sure if I believe this” radar. Check it out below;

As for what’s actually showcased in the video, I’ll say this…

  1. They talk about the new Achievements message, but don’t actually show an example of it. I, for one, would love this feature as I freely admit I probably hit the guide button every time I get an achievement to see what it was for – unless it was something obvious and/or expected.
  2. Am I the only one who got really nervous when they were talking about low-power background downloads and the fact that the 360’s cooling fans would shut off during this process?

PLAYSTATION 3 ARMORED CORE 4 DEMO NOW AVAILABLE

Sony really needs to set up some website or blog where you can go to see what’s going on in the PlayStation Store, as I really have no idea how long this demo has been available beyond saying that it wasn’t there last week. While I’m griping about the PlayStation Store, I also feel the need to say they really need to organize things better – nothing is more frustrating than not finding what you want right away because you had to surf through pages of stuff you couldn’t possibly care about.

I’ll cut my griping short now and get on with the news – a demo of Armored Core 4 for the PlayStation 3 is now available for download via the PlayStation Store. The demo weighs in at 991mb and includes 3 single player missions. (If you’ve already downloaded the Xbox 360 version of the demo via the Marketplace, you may want to skip this one as it’s the same demo)

FORZA 2 DEMO CONFIRMED, CAR LIST EXPANDED

Microsoft has announced that not only is Forza Motrosport 2 on track for it’s May 15th release, but that a demo will be coming to Xbox Live within the next few weeks;

"We’ve spent the last several months telling you all about the incredibly deep and realistic features of “Forza Motorsport 2.”  Soon you’ll be able to take the game for a test drive on Xbox LIVE Marketplace – the rumors this week of a downloadable demo are true, details on timing will be confirmed in the coming weeks." – Gamerscore Blog

If that wasn’t enough to get you excited, the Forza team has also now updated the game’s car list to include all the American, European and Asian made cars (along with the associated "exotic" and "customized" speedsters) that will be shipping with Forza 2. The team has also announced that the final update to the list (the race class cars) should be added sometime within the next two weeks.

What does this all mean? It means we’re getting damn close to the game going gold and Microsoft’s premiere racing title finding it’s way into the hands of gamers everywhere. I don’t know about you, but I’m starting to feel a bit of a tingle in my right foot.

XBOX LIVE ARCADE WEDNESDAYS: LUXOR 2

You know, I couldn’t possibly be more underwhelmed about this week’s release if I tried. There’s just something about paying money for casual games you can find online for free that really bugs me. Beyond that, the fact that there are at least 3 games that come to mind that match this one, including Zuma Deluxe, which is already available in the Xbox Live Arcade and you’ve got something that (imho) really shouldn’t be selling for 800 points ($10).

That said, if you’re into casual games and do think that Luxor 2 is worth your money, who am I to tell you otherwise? Everyone has their own tastes in games, and while I may not think this title is worth more than a passing mention, you may be overjoyed that it’s hitting today. If that’s the case, have at it. Personally, I’ll be dropping my 800 points on Symphony of the Night instead.

Title: Luxor 2
Developer: MumboJumbo
Publisher: United Developers
Genre: Xbox Live Arcade
Release Date: 4/4/07
Console: Xbox 360
Players: 1
Xbox Live Aware: Yes
HDTV Support: 1080i
Full Game: 800 points ($10)
Rating: E (Everyone)
Demo?: Yes

From the Xbox.com product description;

“Set, the Egyptian god of chaos, again threatens the Two Lands, and you must save Ancient Egypt from his terrible wrath in Luxor 2. Wielding the powers of Isis, battle your way across Egypt. Use your mystical winged scarab to shoot magical spheres and destroy encroaching colored spheres by making matches of three or more. Stop them all before they can reach the pyramids.

Unleash the powers of Isis by catching falling power-ups. Collect gems and jewelry for bonus points, or Golden Ankh coins to earn extra lives. Defeat Set in his temple stronghold or Egypt is doomed!.

  • Levels: Play through 88 explosive levels with 13 new bonus rounds.
  • Difficulty: Choose from four levels of difficulty, including the mind-bending Challenge of Horus.
  • Modes: Experience four awesome modes of play— Adventure, Practice, Survival, and Pharaoh’s Challenge.
  • Power-ups: Collect 13 exciting power-ups including the new Lightning Storm and Pharaoh’s Dagger.
  • Rankings: The player ranking system has 100 levels from Farm Hand to Pharaoh of the Two Lands. – Xbox.com

I still can’t comment on any of recently released XBLA titles as my 360 is still in for repairs. According to UPS, it should be arriving tomorrow, which means that I’ll be spending quite a bit of time with Guitar Hero II and Symphony of the Night – but after that, we’ll be getting back to our normal weekly mini-impressions of the previous week’s Live Arcade title.

SEGA ANNOUNCES NIGHTS: JOURNEY OF DREAMS

The rumors were true – Sega has announced that a sequel to the Saturn classic NiGHTS: Into Dreams is now in development for the Nintendo Wii. Not much is known about NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams at this point beyond the fact that it’ll be on the Wii, it will support one or two players and most importantly, it’s slated for release this holiday season.

"The critically-acclaimed franchise that gave gamers the freedom to fly in a world of dreams is coming to the Wii™! As a fantasy jester called NiGHTS, you will experience a heightened sense of gliding, spiraling, and looping through seven extraordinary worlds of Nightopia where the ocean resides in the sky and glass-formed cliffs overlook a castle of mirrors. When the “Nightmarens” from the neighboring dark world of Nightmare infiltrate the idyllic Nightopia, NiGHTS must defend the dream world to keep it safe for all dreamers. This holiday, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams will take you in a voyage filled with courage, hope and inspiration." – Sega

I now have a reason to buy a Wii – so long as Sega doesn’t take this one down the same road they’ve been taking the Sonic franchise.

LAZY DAY TRAILERS: VIVA PINATA – SKULLS OF THE VANQUISHED

While "Skulls of the Vanquished" is not the actual title of this video, it is one of the things that makes the below commercial for Microsoft’s Viva Pinata absolutely hilarious. I won’t spoil the rest of it, other than to say that when Horstachio started quoting from Conan the Barbarian, I was literally on the floor laughing.

And now the shout-outs to all the places where I saw this video today;

SONY TO DROP PSP CORE SYSTEM TO $169.99?

Kotaku is reporting that Sony will be dropping the price of the PlayStation Portable’s Core pack to $169.99 effective immediately. While I’ve certainly been impressed with the direction Sony has been taking with the PSP lately, I still think that the buy in is still a bit too high. The Core PSP includes only an AC adapter and battery, meaning at the very least you’re going to be on the hook for a memory stick as well.

Given the fact that the rumor mill is still pointing towards the possible announcement of a PSP2 sometime this year, you have to wonder if this is an attempt to bolster the system’s install base or if it’s more about clearing out inventory. I don’t know about you guys, but I think I’ll wait for the price to hit $149.99 or less before I bite – even with the enhanced version of Rondo of Blood coming this year.

HARMONIX ANNOUNCES ROCK BAND

On the eve of Guitar Hero II’s arrival on the Xbox 360, Harmonix has announced that they’ll be teaming with Electronic Arts and MTV to bring Rock Band to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year.

What is Rock Band, you ask? While little about the gameplay was revealed, I get the feeling this will be a game like Guitar Hero where instead of just playing the guitar, there are also options for singing vocals, playing the bass guitar, and playing the drums. Yeah, I’m drooling too. (well, I’m drooling about everything but the vocals – I freely admit I couldn’t hold a tune to save my life)

“Our vision for Rock Band is to completely change the way people interact with and enjoy the music they love,” said Jeff Yapp, EVP, MTV Program Enterprises. “By joining forces with EA and the music industry’s largest record labels and publishers, we are striving to create a groundbreaking new platform that allows people to connect with their favorite music and artists in ways they never have before.” – Harmonix press release

The game is scheduled to ship this holiday season, and before you ask, they’re still working out the details of how they’ll be offering the peripherals for purchase. I expect this is going to be one of those titles that’s going to get pricey real fast.

THIS WEEK’S RELEASES: APRIL 2ND – APRIL 8TH

Well, it’s finally here – Guitar Hero II comes to the Xbox 360 this week, and let me tell you, should my 360 not make it back from warranty service in time, I’m going to be one seriously unhappy camper. I was really looking forward to kicking back on a scheduled vacation day and just rocking out. Oh well, I can always hit the PlayStation 2 version and pretend if worse comes to worse, right?

We’ve got a few other titles worth mentioning as well this week, with Sims 2 addicts getting yet another fix with The Sims 2: Celebration Stuff (PC), Prince of Persia: Rival Swords (PSP & Wii) and Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales (DS). Still, let’s be honest – it’s Guitar Hero II that’s going to run roughshod over retail this week, and if you’re one of the few who’s never had a chance to try it before, do yourself a favor and pick it up – it’s worth every penny.

Let’s take a look at what else we can expect to see at retail this week, minus the still missing Air Cargo Pilot, maybe it’s finally met it’s end out there in the Vaporware desert;

  • Cake Mania – DS – 4/4/2007
  • Enchanted Arms – PS3 – 4/4/2007

APRIL FOOL’S DAY PART II: THE WIIHELM & MORE

It seems to be a slow day for decent April Fools gags, but at least ThinkGeek is still on the ball. A few years back they brought us the PC Easy Bake Oven, which is still one of my all time favorite internet April Fool’s Day gags. How do you top something like that? Well, you don’t really, but the fine folks at ThinkGeek R&D have brought us something new… The WiiHelm! That’s right, why risk having your Wiimote strap break off in your hands when you can secure your Wiimote to your head instead? Sure to provide hours of fun – why, just check out their video demonstration!

If the WiiHelm and/or gaming isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other April Fool’s Day items there to keep you company – like the Piranhaz – R/C Battle Fish (Sure to be a hit at parties), the Lonely Guy Dream Vacation Digital Photo Frame (Sure to be a hit if you never go to parties!) or the shockingly great Vilcus Plug Dactyloadapter. Yes, no matter what your April Fool’s tastes, ThinkGeek has got something for you!

APRIL FOOL’S DAY – NO SHENANIGANS HERE

While there may be no shenanigans going on here, that sure doesn’t mean I can’t point out any great gags I see across the web today, now does it?

In all actuality, I was thinking of making a bunch of April Fool’s changes to the site, but in the end, time just wouldn’t allow it. You know what? Having seen what I’ve just seen over at Destructoid, I’m glad I didn’t – because anything I could possibly have come up with wouldn’t have been anywhere near as great. If you’re familiar with Kotaku’s Brian Crecente, you’re going to love this one – if you’re not, the joke is probably going to be lost on you.

While it’s too early to call this race, I think everyone else is going to have to do some serious work to top Destructoid today – but if I see any other truly noteworthy gags, I’ll be sure to post them.

While we’re on the subject of Brian Crecente (and not on the subject of gaming), I highly recommend you check out his last article as a full time staff member over at the Rocky Mountain News. It’s a great read where he gives us his take on the whole Pirates vs Ninja debate, and I’m happy to say that he comes down on the right side of this one. Arrrrr!
