EGM REFUSES TO BOW TO PUBLISHER PRESSURE, GAMERS APPLAUD

In the February issue of Electronic Games Monthly (EGM), Editor-in-Chief Dan "Shoe" Hsu announced that EGM had effectively been blacklisted by a few companies for publishing what amount to less than glowing reviews of certain games.

"Except with some game publishers, of course. Less-than-totally-positive previews don't sit well with those who are used to those press-release rehashes. Combine that with our candid reviews, and you can imagine the consequences that we have to face constantly.

For the time being, you'll get little, late, or no coverage of the following products: anything Mortal Kombat (they didn't like our reviews), anything from Sony's sports department (ditto), and now, anything from Ubisoft (it seems our coverage of Assassin's Creed was the last straw). So in case you're wondering why you're seeing so little of these games in our magazines and on our websites, now you know." – Dan Hsu

Now before you think that the above statement is EGM punishing those publishers for their stance, it's not. Hsu does say the the magazine will continue to cover affected titles as much, and as fairly as possible, but that previews and such will be hard to come by while being essentially blacklisted.

Now the whole review thing has certainly been getting out of hand of late, what with the Gerstmann firing over at Gamespot and now this. It's one thing to invite the media in and give them a snow job about your product, show them it's best features only and try to get them excited about it, but when you start attempting to influence the final review by methods of coercion, that's another.

These publishers need to realize that review sites are in the business of reviewing a product, not working as an extension of a company's marketing department. The bread and butter of any good review site is that people know they can trust the reviewers to tell them what they honestly thought about a title. When a magazine or site compromises on that, they either become a laughing stock or people just stop paying any attention to them – either way, it's not good for business.

In short, I'd like to congratulate Dan and the rest of the EGM team on sticking up for journalistic integrity on this one and not caving in to external pressure. Way to go guys – it makes me proud to be an EGM subscriber. Keep telling it like it is, and I'll keep renewing.

Dan's entire editorial has also been reposted over at 1up.com, so check out the link below for all the details.

MANHUNT 2 GETS SHANKED AND YANKED

I’d love to go into detail on my thoughts regarding the whole Manhunt 2 rating issue right now, but unfortunately, time is working against me right now – hopefully I’ll get to talk at length about the situation over the weekend. What I will talk about right now is that Gamespot is reporting that Take-Two Interactive has decided to "temporarily suspend" the release of the now embattled Manhunt 2 while the company takes a long look at what it’s options are as far as the game is concerned;

"Take-Two Interactive Software has temporarily suspended plans to distribute Manhunt 2 for the Wii or PlayStation platforms while it reviews its options with regard to the recent decisions made by the British Board of Film Classification and Entertainment Software Rating Board. We continue to stand behind this extraordinary game. We believe in freedom of creative expression, as well as responsible marketing, both of which are essential to our business of making great entertainment.” -Take-Two Interactive (as reported by Gamespot)

The big decision here is whether Take-Two will attempt to change the game enough for the ESRB to drop it’s rating to "Mature" or shelve the title entirely. There’s no middle ground on this one as both Nintendo and Sony have already stated they will not certify Adults Only rated games for play on their consoles, which means the rating no longer just makes the game a pariah to most retailers, but now makes the game (which was scheduled to release on the PS2, PSP and Wii) completely unsellable.

So there you have it – Manhunt 2 will not be making it’s scheduled July 10th release date or quite possibly any other release date. Sounds like Thrill Kill all over again.

BLIZZARD BANS 59,000 WORLD OF WARCRAFT ACCOUNTS

On the official World of Warcraft forums, a Blizzard employee has announced that in an attempt to stem the rising tide of goldfarmers in World of Warcraft, they banned some 59,000 World of Warcraft accounts in June and removed some 22 million gold from the game.

"As part of our efforts to eliminate cheating from World of Warcraft, we recently banned approximately 59,000 World of Warcraft accounts in the month of June, and with that removed well over 22 million gold from the total economy across all realms. While we regret having to take such extreme action, these accounts were participating in activities that directly violated World of Warcraft’s Terms of Use, including the use of third-party programs to farm gold and items. Such behavior not only negatively impacts the economy of a realm, it diminishes the achievements of those who play legitimately. We will continue to aggressively monitor all World of Warcraft realms in order to protect the service and our players from the harmful effects of cheating." -Eyonix

More power to you Blizzard. While I’m sure these people are just coming back on other accounts, at least you’re trying to do something about the problem. I’m sure anyone who has ever had to deal with an annoying goldfarmer in game agrees with me on this one. Then again, most people who’ve had that experience probably feel Blizzard didn’t go far enough and should actually be doing something a little more dire to these people.

HALO 3 AI & THE BUNGIE WAAHMBULANCE

In their weekly update, Bungie let some information on the progression of Halo 3‘s AI slip and gave us another peek into the mail bag of the Waahmbulance.

On the subject of the games AI, Frankie advised that while the Xbox 360 is capable of some gorgeous graphics, there’s enough power there to make some hefty improvements to the way npc’s behave too;

“At this point, they’re testing out the new AI and encounters as much as anything else. The graphics range from completely untextured placeholder surfaces, too brilliantly lit and detailed objects. But again, this is a gameplay test, not a graphics one. Lots of folks focus on what technology can do for the appearance of a game – but the 360’s prodigious horsepower can also be applied to AI – the behaviors, movements and reactions of computer-controlled characters. That counts for your human allies, but it’s more noticeable at this early stage in the behavior of your opponents.

Today, I swear I saw some Grunts do a classic pincer-movement to trap me in a narrow canyon. I was battling um, something bigger than a Grunt, and suddenly, I’m being peppered by a second group of jerks, mostly Grunts, who’d been sent in around my flanks to take me out. Grunts are still grunts though, and once I showed some serious opposition, a couple of them panicked and fled, but they nearly had me and it was quite a shock.” -Frankie the Content Monkey, Bungie.com

Once they got the bothersome details of gameplay aside, they dug into a subject everyone has been clamoring for more information on, namely new entries for the Bungie Waahmbulance. For those who don’t remember, the Bungie Waahmbulance is the place where whining, poorly written complaints from folks who have been banned from Live go after they arrive in the Bungie inbox. Let’s take a look at some of this weeks inductees;

HALO 3 AI & THE BUNGIE WAAHMBULANCE

In their weekly update, Bungie let some information on the progression of Halo 3‘s AI slip and gave us another peek into the mail bag of the Waahmbulance.

On the subject of the games AI, Frankie advised that while the Xbox 360 is capable of some gorgeous graphics, there’s enough power there to make some hefty improvements to the way npc’s behave too;

Once they got the bothersome details of gameplay aside, they dug into a subject everyone has been clamoring for more information on, namely new entries for the Bungie Waahmbulance. For those who don’t remember, the Bungie Waahmbulance is the place where whining, poorly written complaints from folks who have been banned from Live go after they arrive in the Bungie inbox. Let’s take a look at some of this weeks inductees;

The Snitch
“i can name two guys i have played with who cheated i am doing this because we were stand bying and i got banned. the other two didn’t. one was bridging the other guy host who was stand bying. i was just in the party. im not trying to beg for my account back. i know that i was cheating and it was wrong. im just pissed that they didnt get caught when i did. here are their names” – Some cheating jerk

Man, there is just no honor among thieves…or modders anymore, is there?

Oh…my…God… I literally weep for the future. I may bill Bungie for wear and tear on my spell-checker after that. I think every 13 year old out there needs to go find this kid and smack him upside the head for besmirching the good name of thirteen year olds everywhere.

HALO 3 AI & THE BUNGIE WAAHMBULANCE

In their weekly update, Bungie let some information on the progression of Halo 3‘s AI slip and gave us another peek into the mail bag of the Waahmbulance.

On the subject of the games AI, Frankie advised that while the Xbox 360 is capable of some gorgeous graphics, there’s enough power there to make some hefty improvements to the way npc’s behave too;

Once they got the bothersome details of gameplay aside, they dug into a subject everyone has been clamoring for more information on, namely new entries for the Bungie Waahmbulance. For those who don’t remember, the Bungie Waahmbulance is the place where whining, poorly written complaints from folks who have been banned from Live go after they arrive in the Bungie inbox. Let’s take a look at some of this weeks inductees;

Potty Mouth
“hey how about u dumbasses stop putting [censored] [censored] games on [censored] halo2. You have some of the [censored] ideas. instead of new games how about gettin off ur lazy asses and making new maps [censored]” -Some kid

I hope that isn’t the same mouth he eats with…

He’s only 3… err 13 years old
“ok i dout there is any thing you can do and if so o well. ok this happend a wile ago but i have not had the time to come here i had an xbox and it brock so i bout a used one because i did not have the monney to i gat home and put my gamertag on the xbox and when on live when i gat on it seid i was band from match making. i was wondering why. then i gat a xbox 360 a few days ago and put my gammer on there thinking it was just that xbox was wierd or something but it told me the same thing. i was just wondering if thiers any thing i can do? my gammertag is [withheld]

THE BUNGIE WAAAHMBULANCE IS BACK!

Due to the amazing reviews of the first Waaahmbulance post over at Bungie’s website, Content Monkey Frankie has seen fit to give us more stories from the Land of the Banned from the current week. It’s not as entertaining as episode 1, but there are some gems to be found – like this one;

this is the only email address about xbl, so im gonna email you. I was banned form xbl, and i dont know why, i was doing more stuff on my other account that was against the rules rather than the account that got banned.” -Some Cheating Moron

While you’re reading the current weekly post to get to that wonderful nugget of wisdom, be sure to check out the references to Halo 3’s multiplayer game and the comments regarding the redesign of familiar vehicles for Halo 3. Check out this week’s update thread here for all the fun. In case you missed the original Bungie Waaahmbulance story, you can click here to check it out.

On a related note, do you think the kid I quoted above was dumb enough to give them the name of his other account too? I weep for the future.
