TWO MORE CLASSIC EXIDY ROMS FOR MAME RELEASED

If you remember, awhile back H.R. Kaufmann, the president of Xidy (formerly known as Exidy), began making all the titles in the company's classic arcade lineup freely available for use with MAME via the official site of the MAME development team.

Although it's been awhile since the last set of ROM releases, it appears that Mr. Kaufmann is still following through on his generous gift to classic game enthusiasts everywhere, as the ROMs for both 1980's Spectar and Targ can now legally be obtained via MAMEDev's ROM page.

Once again, I'd like to extend a huge thank you to Mr. Kaufmann for his generosity.

MAMEUI .121.2 RELEASED

MameUI, the Windows GUI port of MAME, has now been updated to version .121.2. As such, I would advise against upgrading to the latest version until MAMEDEV.org is back online and the latest information can be obtained.

Following in the footsteps of the latest MAME update, MameUI v.120.4, the Windows GUI port of MAME v.120u4 is now available. The same advice I gave about the latest build of MAME applies to this version of MameUI as well.

As you may have noticed in this post's text, there's been a slight change to MAME32. The emulator has now been renamed MameUI and is available in both 32 and 64 bit flavors (as MameUI32 and MameUI64 respectively), so be sure to download the correct version for you CPU.

Check out the official MameUI page here for more details and the download links.

MAME V.120U4 RELEASED

The updates continue on the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, as version .120u4 is now available for download. This update features a decent number of small background updates, but contains no major changes to the emulator's code.

As usual, unless you've been having difficulties with your current installation, I’d recommend holding off on upgrading until the next full release. Those of you interested in testing this build for the dev team should download the update and then head on over to MAME Testers to find out how to get started.

The updated emulator files can be found at the official MAME development page at Mamedev.org. You can Click here to see the full list of what’s new in this update.

MAME V.118U6 RELEASED

Unfortunately, it appears that there were a few bugs in the last interim update of the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, so version .118u6 is now available for download. MAME V.118U5 RELEASED

The updates continue on the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, as version .118u5 is now available for download. This update continues the work previously started on the CD32 drivers, makes some driver fixes for Mappy and adds a new parameter (-refreshspeed) which will adjust the emulator’s speed to match your monitor’s refresh settings.

While none of that will probably screw up anything in the emulator, the average user still really has no reason to upgrade to this version – especially given that this should be the last update before the release of v.119. I’d recommend holding off on upgrading your installation until the next full release. MAME V.118U3 RELEASED

The updates continue on the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, as version .118u3 is now available for download. This update makes a bunch of background changes including more DIP switch adjustments, enhancements to CD-ROM emulation in the CPS3 driver and a few changes to make V30 and I8086 CPU cores run on actual 16-bit busses.

What that means to the average user is that there are a lot of things that could go wrong and nothing earth-shatteringly new in this build. The bottom line is that (say it with me now, gang) you may want to consider holding off on upgrading your installation until the next full release. As always, those of you interested in testing this build for the dev team should download the update and then head on over to MAME Testers to find out how to get started.

MAME V.118U2 RELEASED

The updates continue on the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, as version .118u2 is now available for download. This update makes a few changes to DIP switch adjustments and introduces a new command line control which will allow users to specify the playback speed of the emulator. According to the development team, this new control should help solve audio playback issues with monitors running at 60Hz.

Bottom line here is if your monitor’s max refresh rate is 60Hz and you’ve been having audio issues, you may want to consider upgrading to this build – beyond that, your best bet is to stick with your current installation until the next full release. As always, those of you interested in testing this build for the dev team should download the update and then head on over to MAME Testers to find out how to get started.

80GB PLAYSTATION 3 WILL NOT INCLUDE PS2 EMOTION ENGINE CHIP

GamesIndustry.Biz is reporting that Sony Computer Entertainment America has confirmed that the newly announced 80GB model of the PlayStation 3 will not include the PlayStation 2 Emotion Engine chip, instead depending on software based emulation for backwards compatibility.

“The current 60 GB model utilizes a hardware and solution for backwards compatibility, namely the Emotion Engine chip. The new 80 GB PS3 will use a software solution for backwards compatibility, similar to that currently found in the PAL model.” – Kimberly Otzman, SCEA – as reported by GamesIndustry.Biz

So let me see if I understand this right… Not only is Sony asking gamers to shell out $599.99 for a bundle that doesn’t seem to be worth the sum of it’s parts, but now they’re actual taking away one of the selling points of the console? I don’t know what they’re smoking over at SCEA, but it must be some really freaky stuff.

Because it seems a given that once existing stocks of the PlayStation 3 are sold out, future shipments of the 60GB model will follow suit, those of you planning on buying a PS3 soon may want to accelerate those plans to ensure you get an Emotion Engine equipped model.

As usual, unless you’ve been having problems with your current installation of MAME or have the boards for Change Lanes or DJ Boy and are feeling a bit impatient, I’d advise sticking with v.116 until the next full release. However, if you’re interested in testing this build for the dev team, feel free to download the update and then head on over to MAME Testers to find out how to get started.

The updated emulator files can be found at the official MAME page at Mamedev.org. You can Click here to see the full list of what’s new in this update.

MAME V.116U2 RELEASED

The second “update” to v.116 of the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, version .116u2, is now available for download. This update centers on the continuing updates to the emulator’s Neo Geo drivers as well as the earliest stages of Capcom CPS-3 support. As usual, unless you’ve been having problems with your current installation of MAME, this update really doesn’t hold much for you and I’d advise sticking with v.116 until the next full release. The only real reason to upgrade would be if you’re interested in testing this build for the dev team, in which case you should head on over to MAME Testers to find out how to get started.

The updated emulator files can be found at the official MAME page at Mamedev.org. You can Click here to see the full list of what’s new in this update.

THREE MORE LEGAL EXIDY ROMS FOR MAME RELEASED

The Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator’s (MAME) development team has announced that H.R. Kauffman, president of Xidy, Inc. (formerly Exidy) has made three more classic games from the Exidy catalog available for free, non-commercial use with the MAME. The three titles, Crash, Fire One! and Rip Cord, were all released in 1979 and while they may not represent the best of Exidy’s catalog, the fact that any ROMS have been made available at all is still something to cheer about. Here’s to hoping Exidy’s titles from 1980 – 1982 are next, as some of those are games I’d love to see everyone get to enjoy again.

MAME V.113U4 RELEASED

The latest "update" version of the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, version .113u4, is now available for download. It would appear that the work on unifying the emulator’s code continues, and while those corrections should promote a few games from "not working" to "working" status, from what I can see there really aren’t any "high profile" titles the fix has added to the land of the living just yet. (Be sure to check out the what’s new file to see if any of your arcade PCB’s have been added to the list).

In other words, for the average user there really isn’t much need to upgrade this time around – unless you’ve been having difficulties with the previous release. As usual, I’d still advise most users to stick with v.113 until v.114 hits to save themselves from any potential headaches. On the other hand, should you happen to be the type that loves a good headache and don’t mind helping to test the latest build for the MAME team, you should head on over to MAME Testers to find out how to get started. Take two aspirin and call me when you run out of quarters.
